Privacy policy

Annotake is a Mac app, and this website, annotake.app. Both are made by Fayzan Malik, an individual in Ontario, Canada, who is responsible for how they handle personal information.
The short version
- Nothing you record leaves your Mac. Annotake has no server that sees your recordings.
- This website doesn’t use cookies, and it counts visits without identifying you.
- We get your email address only if you ask us to email you the download link, and we use it only to send that one email.
The Annotake app
What stays on your Mac. A recording is a folder of screenshots and a steps.md file, saved in ~/Pictures/Annotake unless you choose another folder. Their captions can include window titles, the names of the buttons and fields you click, the keys you press, and file paths. All of it stays on your Mac. Recordings move to the Trash after 30 days by default; in Settings you can keep them for 7 days, 30 days, or forever.
The three permissions, which macOS asks you to grant, and which Annotake uses only on your Mac:
- Screen Recording, so Annotake can capture your screen while you record.
- Accessibility, so it can name the buttons you click, and keep your trigger key out of your clicks while you hold it.
- Input Monitoring, so it can notice your trigger key, and your clicks and keys while you record. It never records what you type.
What goes over the network. Once a day, Annotake checks for updates by fetching its update feed from GitHub, which sees the app’s version and your IP address, as with any download. Updates download from GitHub too. The check sends no other information about your Mac.
Send Feedback. Send Feedback opens a draft in your mail app with the app’s and macOS’s versions, which permissions are granted, the app’s recent log, and its latest crash report. You see the draft, and you choose whether to send it. The log never holds button names, window titles, or keys.
Coming later. A later version will add an optional sign-in and daily counts of how much Annotake is used. This policy will be updated before that version ships, and the app will ask you before it sends anything new.
This website
- Hosting. annotake.app is hosted by Vercel. Like any host, Vercel processes your IP address and your browser’s details to deliver the pages and to stop abuse.
- Cookies. This website doesn’t use cookies. Your choice of the light or dark theme stays in your browser’s local storage and is never sent to us.
- Analytics. Vercel Web Analytics counts visits, and which site sent them, without cookies and without identifying you.
- Downloads. Annotake downloads from GitHub (
github.com/fayzan123/annotake-releases), under GitHub’s privacy statement.
The link email
If you ask us to email you the download link, we use your address to send that one email, through Resend. We keep no list, and we won’t email you again. Resend keeps its sending logs for 30 days. Our own logs record only whether the email went out, never your address.
Who else sees data
Only the services named above: Vercel (hosting and analytics), Resend (the link email), and GitHub (downloads and updates). They’re in the United States, so what they process is handled there, under US law. We never sell personal information, and we don’t share it for advertising.
Your rights
- You have the right to see, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you. With no accounts and no list, we hold none ourselves, and the services above keep only what this policy says.
- If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled it, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
- In the EU or the UK, you also have rights under the GDPR, including access, correction, deletion, and objection, and you can complain to your data protection authority. The legal basis for the link email is your request for it, and for keeping this website secure, our legitimate interest.
Children
Annotake and this website aren’t meant for children under 13, or under 16 in the EU.
Changes
When this policy changes, so does the date at the top, and big changes are noted on the home page. We keep the earlier versions.
